Witness one of nature’s most spectacular journeys — right in the heart of our historic downtown.
Nature’s Show, Steps from Downtown
Each fall, thousands of Pacific salmon return to the Ganaraska River, leaping upstream in a powerful display of determination. In Port Hope, you can see this incredible migration up close — all within walking distance of our charming downtown shops and cafes.
The salmon run is one of nature’s most spectacular events, when thousands of salmon swim upstream from Lake Ontario into the Ganaraska River to spawn. Each fall, usually from mid-September to mid-October, these powerful fish leap against the current and climb the fish ladder in downtown Port Hope. It’s a once-a-year display of strength and determination — and one of the best places in Ontario to witness this migration up close.
When to Visit
- Peak Season: Mid-August to mid-October
- Best Time of Day: Early mornings or late afternoons, when cooler water makes the salmon most active
- Travel Tip: Please keep in mind that the timing of the salmon run can change from year to year, depending on factors like rainfall and water temperature. While we can’t predict everything about the fish, we can guarantee it’s always a memorable experience.
Best Places to View
The best place to experience the salmon run is at Corbett’s Dam and the adjoining Fish Ladder in the Port Hope Conservation Area.
-
Up close at the Fish Ladder: Watch salmon leap just a few feet away as they power their way upstream.
-
From the Bridge: Take in a sweeping view of the entire dam, fish ladder, and rushing Ganaraska River.
-
Along the Riverside Trail: Stroll the scenic path and spot dense schools of salmon gathering in the river below.

- Dress Warmly: Riverbanks can feel much cooler than town, especially in the fall. Bring an extra layer so you can comfortably enjoy the show, even if the day starts off mild.
- Stay Safe by the Water: The riverbanks can be slippery, and the current is strong. Please don’t climb the guard rails, or get too close to the edge. Enjoy the view from safe, designated areas.
- Respect the River & the Salmon: Stay on designated paths, avoid disturbing the fish, and never throw objects into the water. Helping to protect the salmon and their habitat ensures this natural wonder can be enjoyed for generations.
- Know the Fishing Regulations: Most of the Ganaraska River is subject to a seasonal sanctuary for all fish species from September 1 to October 14. This protected area extends from the south side of the Jocelyn Street bridge to the CNR Bridge (the first rail line north of lake Ontario), where fishing is prohibited during this period. Visit Ontario Fishing Regulations for Zone 17 and the Fish Migration page for more information.
