A Midweek Fall Wander

Weekdays in Port Hope bring a different kind of magic — slower streets, quieter trails, and more time to savour every detail. With the salmon run still in full swing but fewer crowds to contend with, it’s the perfect moment to enjoy a laid-back midweek escape filled with shopping, culture, and a touch of adventure.

Morning – Salmon Run in Peace

Begin your day with a leisurely stroll through historic downtown, following the Ganaraska River to the fish ladder. Take the route that fits your lifestyle by following one of our trail connections starting right from downtown Port Hope - such as the Ganaraska Hiking Trail or Cochingomink Trail. On weekdays, the atmosphere is calm and relaxed, giving you space to fully appreciate the salmon migration before exploring the town at your own pace.

Midday – Café Stop & Local Browsing

Treat yourself at The Main, pairing a handcrafted coffee with one of their famous, fresh pain au chocolat. Then wander Walton Street, browsing through unique boutiques, artisan goods, and specialty shops that make Port Hope’s retail scene one-of-a-kind. Explore more options on our Shopping page.

Afternoon – Curiosity & Creativity

For a change of scenery, head to Primitive Designs, where massive metal sculptures and exotic handcrafted décor make shopping feel like a gallery visit. Afterward, enjoy a peaceful walk along the Waterfront Trail or relax at East Beach or West Beach, where Lake Ontario provides the perfect backdrop to unwind.

Evening – Artful Dining & Strolling

Dine at The Thirsty Goose, a friendly gastropub offering hearty meals and local character. To close out the evening, take the It Walking Tour, tracing filming sites from Stephen King’s IT through Port Hope’s atmospheric streets. Learn more about this and other experiences on our Self-Guided Tours page.

Night – Overnight Stay

Settle in for the night at the Port Hope Inn, located within easy distance of downtown, walking trails, and fall activities. With spacious rooms, complimentary breakfast, and modern amenities, it’s the perfect place to recharge after your weekday wander. For more ideas, explore our Accommodations page.

Next Morning – A Sweet Send-Off

Before heading home, make sure to visit Stapleton's Farm Market to stock up on fresh-off-the-field fruits and veggies, and other local products.
