The Municipality of Port Hope regulates parking through the Traffic and Parking By-law. Before you park, make sure to read all parking signs and look for meters to pay, if necessary.

Parking lots and meters

There are more than 350 public parking spaces within walking distance to some of the best restaurants, shopping experiences, and cultural entertainment in downtown Port Hope. Electric vehicle charging stations are in select locations. We do offer accessible parking spaces for those with accessibility needs.

Rates and times for parking meters and municipal parking lots

Parking meters - on street
  • Cost: $1 per hour
  • Time limit: a maximum of four hours 
  • Enforced: Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. You do not need to pay for metered parking on Saturdays and Sundays and statutory holidays.

Pay and display - municipal lot (Elias lot)
  • Cost: $1 per hour
  • Time limit: a maximum of four hours 
  • Enforced: Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. You do not need to pay for metered parking on Saturdays and Sundays and statutory holidays.

Pay and display - marina boat launch gravel lots (Mill Street, lots 1 and 2)
  • Cost: $1 per hour to max of $10 per day. Note, this applies to all vehicles. 
  • Enforced: Monday to Sunday, excluding statutory holidays. Weekends are not free at the two Pay and Display lots at the marina. Please note there is no overnight parking permitted from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

Free municipal lots

There are a number of free parking lots within the urban area of Port Hope that are operated by the municipality. Please use our Parking GIS map to located these lots. 

  • Cost: Free
  • Time limit: a maximum of 12 hours

Hotspot Parking App

Phone with clock indicating how much time is left on parking spotThe HotSpot Parking App is now available at all meters and Pay and Display machines in the Municipality of Port Hope.

The HotSpot Parking App charges users a $0.25 fee per use with the option of a monthly membership for $2 a month or an annual membership of $20. Hard copy parking tickets are still issued. They are not issued through the mobile app.

The benefits of using HotSpot include:
  • A cashless interaction
  • A notification via the app when your meter is going to expire
  • The ability to add more time to your parking spot (up to the maximum time limit)
  • A code for the area you parked in
  • The ability to end your parking session at any time and get a refund for the remaining time.
How to use HotSpot:

  1. Download the HotSpot Parking App from the Apple Store or Google Play Store!
  2. Create an account with your mobile phone number or email address.
  3. Park anywhere you see HotSpot Parking App signs and decals.
  4. Pay for your parking session from your phone.
  5. Extend your time remotely if you’d like to stay longer.
  6. Receive digital copies of your parking receipts through the app.
Parking and fine reminders:

Reminders: 

  • You do not have to use the mobile app in order to pay, standard methods of payment for parking remain unchanged
  • Parking is free evenings (after 6:00 p.m.), weekends^, and statutory holidays. HotSpot will not process payment during these times
  • HotSpot collects revenue from monthly and annual fees; they do not receive a percentage of the meter revenue. This new technology has no cost to the Municipality
  • If you experience a problem with the HotSpot app, you can contact HotSpot directly 1-855-712-5888

^Weekends are not free at the two Pay and Display lots at the marina boat launch.

Accessible parking and Veteran parking

Accessible parking and transportation

We offer free accessible parking (Accessible Parking Permit must be on display) and accessible transit options to help you get around the Municipality of Port Hope.

Veteran parking

Report an issue with a parking meter or pay and display unit

If a parking meter is not functioning, note the number on the parking meter and the street name. If a pay and display unit does not provide a parking voucher, note the parking lot location. Call us at 905-753-2230 and we will review. If the meter or pay and display unit is not functioning properly, maintenance will be arranged.

Parking meter rentals

If you need to park at a metered parking spot for more than four hours, you can rent a meter for the day. Contact By-Law Administration to rent a parking meter. It costs $10 daily per meter plus an additional $10 cash deposit you will get back once you return the meter bag.

Meter rentals are available for:

  • Construction
  • Building renovations
  • Moving

On-street residential parking

On-street parking in residential areas are subject to restrictions. Please observe parking signs carefully to determine if and when parking is permitted.

Things to know

  • Be courteous to residents, pedestrians and other motorists
  • Do not obstruct or park on sidewalks
  • Keep 9.14m away from any intersection
  • Bus stops are reserved for buses
  • Be aware of winter parking regulations
  • When in doubt, err on the side of caution
  • The maximum time limit a vehicle can be parked on any street is 72 hours unless otherwise posted.

Seasonal parking

Winter parking regulations

From December 1 to March 15 between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. you cannot park your vehicle on designated snow routes. This allows for safe snow removal. If your car is left on the street during this time, it may be towed at your expense.

During the school year

Please remember, as per the Traffic and Parking By-law there are streets in town like Percival Street and Peacock Blvd that have parking restrictions during the school year.

Parking is prohibited between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on:

  1. Percival Street (north side) from a point opposite the westerly limit of Trefusis Street to Scriven Boulevard.
  2. Peacock Boulevard.

You may park on these streets on Saturday, Sunday or holidays throughout the year, and any day in the months of July and August.

The Municipality of Port Hope, partnered with Ivy Park & Charge, offers two conveniently located electric vehicle charging stations, with two ports available at each station.

With charging up to 7kWs, charge your battery while you play at the Jack Burger Sports Complex or during your downtown visit at the Elias Street parking lot. Download the Ivy Charging Network 2.0 app to get started!
